It is a colorless, water-insoluble liquid with the characteristic odor of toluene thinner. Toluene is a mono-substituent benzene derivative consisting of CH₃ attached to a phenyl group. Hence the IUPAC systematic name of toluene is methyl benzene. Toluene is an aromatic hydrocarbon. It is also used to make TNT explosives.
