Ethyl methyl ketone or Methyl ethyl ketone, also known as MEK for short, is a liquid organic compound with the systematic name butanone. It has an acetone-like odor and is used as a solvent in industry. Copper, zinc and bronze catalysts are used in the production of 2-butanol by oxidation. It is flammable. It is used as a solvent in paint stripping, paper coating, flexography and gravure printing, diazotype materials are used in rubber production and in applications such as wood varnishes.
