Ethyl acetate is an organic compound with the formula CH₃COOCH₂CH₃. This colorless liquid compound has a sweet smell, like some glues and nail polish. It is not poisonous. Ethyl acetate is the ester of ethanol and acetic acid, and it is a frequently produced substance in the industry because it is a strong solvent.

 

Ethyl acetate is generally used as solvent and diluent. It is also preferred because of its cheapness, low toxicity and pleasant smell. For example, it is used to clean advertising posters and remove nail polish. This solvent removes the caffeine in coffee and tea.
