Acetic acid or ethanoic acid is an organic acid with the formula CH₃COOH, known for giving vinegar its sour taste and pungent odour. It is one of the smallest of the carboxylic acids. It is formed in nature by the oxidation of carbohydrates. In industry, acetic acid is produced both biologically and synthetically.
